Altered Art Projects Using this Month’s Kit

This is what I started with……

And this is what I made………..

With just a little measuring beforehand, I was able to create the papers to fit the projects using this month’s free kit from Misty Cato.  From there all I had to do was glue them on and paint the inside of the pencil holder black.  Definitely a doable project.

The math was simple.  The pencil case is 4.25″ across and the 2″ deep.  It’s 6″ to the highest part of the arc of the handle.  Knowing this, I created a paper (setting my parameters to ‘legal size’ paper) that measured 12.5″ long and 6″ high.

See how I just used the blocks of color to match the size of the front and sides?  The blue sections meaure 2″ each and the front (Mom) and back (flower) measure 4.25″ each.  The extra blue at the end is to create a smooth fold over and seal on the one side.  For this pencil holder, I cut the paper out after I printed it (remember to use legal size settings on your printer).  Then, fitting it to the holder, I made the folds and secured it with elastic bands (no adhesive, yet - this step is just to shape the paper).  Once the paper was shaped to fit, I simply applied a thin even coat of Mod Podge all over the outside of the box.  I refit the paper back around the holder, and it stuck.  I used a brayer to roll out the air bubbles, and let dry.  Once dry, I cut the (sides and around the handles) excess paper 1/4″ larger than the box, folded inward and glued down.  I finished it with an ‘all over’ coat of Mod Podge and I painted the entire inside of the box black.

The pen came with the notepad, and it presented an unusual challenge.  It needed a ‘wrap’ of 4″ x 1.5″.  I created that in my software and printed it out.  After I cut it out, I needed to wrap the pen with the paper and use an elastic band to hold it in place while the paper took the cylinder shape.

After a few hours, the paper was removed, and I used a fast tack acid free adhesive and glued the paper to the pen.  I put the elastic back on to secure the paper until the glue had thoroughly dried.

For the notebook, I measured the front cover.  From the red trim to the edge was 5″ and from top to bottom it was 6″.  So, needing a 1/2 inch fold over flap to secure to the inside of the front cover, I created my paper to be 5.5″ x 7″.

This was the easiest, as the paper fit snugly and sealed well on the inside of the front cover.  I just cut the paper out, and folded it over the cover - starting at the red edge and folding over the other 3 sides.  I cut the small squares out for the two corner folds - to make them sit flatter on the inside.  Then I brushed on a thin coat of Mod Podge all over the front and the 3 edges of the inside of the front cover.  I put the paper on and used  a brayer to smooth out the air bubbles.  When it was firmly attached, I gave it an ‘all over’ coat of Mod Podge.  Now it’s all done, but I thought since it is a gift I should make a coordinating card and envelope.  So I created two “card fronts” - one for the card and one for the envelope.  They are 4″ x 6″ and get layered onto a 5″ x 7″ (A7) card.  (Yes, I do happen to be using the templates from Green Sneakers).

I just printed and cut the 4″ x 6″ fronts out, and adhered them to the card and envelope - respectively.  Here’s another look - and the other side of the pencil holder.
