Altered Art Using Digital Kits

I took a plain white hat box and made this:

Plum Cozy Hatbox sm

Using only Doris Castle’s “Plum Cozy” (a free scrapbook kit from ScrapWOW - with membership) and a little ribbon, I created this altered hatbox. It was so much fun, and so simple. Let me tell you how I did it:

I used Print Shop, set up a regular 8.5 x 11 inch page. I know I need two strips to make the band around the main box, and a big round circle for the top. Given my box’s diameter, there will be a little space on both sides between the bands, but I’m using ribbon to accent that spot (and cover the bareness!). So I “inserted” my “graphic” (wallpaper) and made a strip that was 3.5 x 10.5 inches by stretching the wallpaper to fit that measurement. I inserted the big elegant buttons, the frame, the wallpaper behind the frame, and layered them appropriately. Then I hit “select all” and “duplicate” to make another exact copy. I added “Family” to one frame and “Love” to the other.

Now I need a top, so I brought up the wallpaper again, and stretched it to an 8″ square. I added the ribbon, the music tag, and the “plum” frame. Using a similar type font, I added the “For you, Mom” to the tag. I put a small button where the tag hole is.

Using the box lid as a template, I traced around the lid, and cut out my circle. Using Mod Podge (for paper, glossy), I adhered and varnished the sides on, leaving an even space on both sides where the paper does not meet up. I adhered and varnished the box lid. After the Mod Podge had dried sufficiently, I put on a band of brown ribbon and a band of red ribbon over top it around the sides of the lid. I put green ribbon running up the sides, using Mod Podge to “glue” it all down. I let it dry, and it was done! And it really is for my Mom! I just have to come up with something special to put in it!

Thank you, Doris. I loved the papers in the kit. I think it would look great with inked edges, and maybe a little “aging”. I have a hard time doing that on a “new” project, but I like the shabby chic look that inking/sanding edges would have produced.

I also used this same kit to make a real nice vitorian tag. This kit lent itself to it real nice. I layered the musical tag on top of a woman, and then faded it out to be real subtle.Very nice, thanks for the kit!

I love it! Thanks so much for the directions. I’ve been wanting to do some round boxes for storage in my sewing/craft room. This is perfect!

This is pretty awesome. I’m getting ready to do a make and take at a local crop and we’re using 9″ x 6 1/2″ x 2 3/4″ boxes to make Greeting Card Keepsake Boxes! I was thinking about printing some of the papers and using them for this project. They are SO beautiful!!! You showed me that it can be done and how awesome it looks! Thanks!!!

Anyone else interested in this kind of project, Uline.com has the rectangle boxes (50) for a low cost. Also, I made a Calendar of Events for the inside of the box out of 4×6 cards and bound them with my Bind it All and attached it with ribbon (bow on outside of box). I’ll do some photos when I get a moment.

Thanks for the great idea, Jess. I’ve been looking for samples!!! Perfect timing!

    Blessings!
    ~Debbie

Thank you so much for another great idea. I think this would be nice for Mother’s Day.
Using your March free monthly kit I made Easter “Bags” for my Grans Kids to use for their Easter Egg Hunt. It was fun and they liked them very much.
Best wishes and also must tell you I enjoy Rakscraps site.
    Sincerely joyclyn
